Another benchmark year in movies. Consider: There Will Be Blood, Zodiac, Juno, Superbad, Michael Clayton, Ratatouille, Shooter (a gold star Good Bad Movie), 3:10 to Yuma, Grindhouse, Gone Baby Gone, American Gangster, The Bourne Ultimatum, and Eastern Promises. Regarding awards, I think it makes the most sense to swap out No Country for Old Men with There Will Be Blood for Best Picture because There Will Be Blood is a perfect movie, so that’s one change. And also let’s move the Best Actress trophy from Marion Cotillard’s bookshelf and set it down on Ellen Page’s bookshelf (Juno). Beyond that, Russell Crowe (3:10 to Yuma) deserves a nomination for Best Supporting Actor but he doesn’t get to steal it from Javier Bardem, who was phenomenal as the villainous Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men. Likewise, Will Smith deserves a nomination for Best Actor for I Am Legend (the most underrated performance of his career) but he doesn’t get to steal it from Daniel Day-Lewis. And that’s basically it. Everything else feels fine.
